DESIGN TASK

At UC Davis Health Folsom, the art program transforms the 114,000-square-foot Medical Office Building into a light-filled, restorative environment. The collection of 126 artworks by 36 national, regional, and local artists draws inspiration from California’s native landscapes and the calming rhythms of nature.

Anchoring the three-story atrium, a suspended mobile by Christina Watka introduces gentle movement and shifting light. Crafted from naturally sourced mica, softly colored acrylic, and copper, it evokes the delicate palette of wildflowers like poppies and lupine, filling the space with a quiet, ever-changing energy.

Along the second floor, a glass mosaic mirrors the mobile’s organic forms and colors, guiding visitors with continuity and calm. Throughout the building, ceramics, paintings, wood sculptures, and original commissions reflect the surrounding Folsom foothills. 68% percent of the works celebrate Northern California artists, reinforcing UC Davis Health’s commitment to community-centered creativity.

Together, the collection creates a harmonious dialogue between nature, light, and motion. It transforms the medical environment into a space of connection, comfort, and quiet wonder, demonstrating how thoughtfully curated art can uplift both patients and staff.
