DESIGN TASK

For Kaiser Permanente Lakewood, the art program was envisioned as a quiet dialogue between place, community, and care. Located in Lakewood, Colorado, this healthcare project includes 102 curated pieces that connect the building to the surrounding landscape while aligning with the Kaiser Permanente Brand Environments model.

The exterior makes an immediate impression. A three-story mountain supergraphic featuring the Maroon Bells anchors the building and is designed to read clearly in both daylight and at night. Wrapping the service yard, a commissioned mural by a regional artist introduces native plants, wildlife, and a bridge motif. This imagery reflects Lakewood’s role as a connector between the Health Plan and Medical Group, while visually linking the exterior to the interior experience.

Inside, the art continues the mountain and landmark theme, creating a sense of rhythm and continuity throughout the medical office building. Regional artists were thoughtfully selected, resulting in a collection that feels both dynamic and grounded in Colorado. Many works echo the exterior imagery, reinforcing a cohesive visual narrative as visitors move through the space.

Standout pieces include a commissioned quilled paper triptych of the Maroon Bells in Urgent Care and a grouping of circular paintings on the third floor that celebrate native plants and pollinators. These works reflect the surrounding landscape and bring moments of texture, color, and calm to patient areas. Additional commissioned landscapes are woven throughout the building, offering familiarity and a sense of place.

What makes this project especially meaningful is its deep local collaboration. Numerous Colorado-based artists contributed to the collection, including several that are brand new to Art Consulting Services. A Lakewood artist donated a three-story suspended glass installation in the Thrive stair, creating a luminous focal point.

The project was shaped through close partnership with Kaiser Permanente leadership and thoughtful input from the City of Lakewood, resulting in an art program that feels intentional, connected, and distinctly regional.
